The crash occurred shortly before 9 a.m. on Wednesday, April 13 in the southbound lanes at milepost 87.9 in Edison, State Police said.

A tractor trailer hauling a shipping container was traveling southbound. William Martisch, 55, of Union Beach, a NJ Turnpike worker, was conducting operations in the median between the outer and inner roadway at that location, police said.

The tractor-trailer went off the road to the left, struck the guide rail, then struck Martisch, and overturned, police said.

Martisch sustained serious injuries and was taken to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital, police said.  No injuries were reported to the driver of the truck.

The left lane of the New Jersey Turnpike outer roadway was closed for approximately six hours. It was reopened at 2:45 p.m.
